Join the Campaign to Green the Grid

Dirty data centers are rapidly expanding across the US.
Data centers are appearing in communities all over the United States to support the rapid growth of AI, many of them being fast tracked without community input.
Data centers by the numbers:
- Large data centers consume 10 million gallons of water per day, enough to power a town of 50,000
- $9.2 billion is the expected public health cost due to data center air pollution
- Data centers sometimes employ as few as 20 permanent jobs
- Data centers could consume enough energy to power 56 million homes by 2030
From our Justice Innovation Prize, to our Dream Entrepreneurs Network, to our advocacy intelligence project with 51AI — we know that artificial intelligence has the potential to improve lives, but only if it’s developed responsibly.
Join the Green the Grid campaign to support innovation that centers justice, democracy, and respect for the health and rights of the people.

South Memphis is a case study on the economic and environmental impacts of a data center.
15 gas turbines spewing chemicals linked to respiratory, heart and cancer-related diseases at this facility alone. Elon Musk’s xAI is planning to install
40 to 90 turbines at a separate facility
15 permanent jobs will be created — much fewer than was promised by disinformation to obscure negligible job growth
420 megawatts of electricity can be produced by this facility — enough to power a city without providing any improvements to the local grid
Over one million gallons of water are required to operate the facility
