In the last year or so, Ron Paul and the Tea Party movement have made headlines. Although Ron Paul does not represent the Tea Party, as he is closer to libertarians, there are several similarities in their misunderstanding of economics and monetary policies to put them together. Both of these advocate smaller governments and lower taxes. However, when they are questioned on the taxes, Tea Party members are oddly enough not very knowledgeable about them. It is really easy to score points against the government and its taxation of its people, but is hard to explain the benefits of them. The appeals to our American individualism and sense of taxation do not go together. It is easy to see your paycheck and notice the taxes that were taken out of it, with out looking at the public roadways that the taxes are used to work for. Law enforcement affords them safety and security while they are driving on public roads, and enforce the regulations that ensure this safe travel. They also provide them with insurance for fair treatment from their employers, and the ability of companies to gain the property and rights to make it possible for those employers to create a stable and capitalistic environment. Ron Paul's message slams home to many people who agree with the ideology, but know very little if anything at all about mainstream economics. They just listen to Ron Paul's oratories thinking that he is something to behold and knows about things that have been missed by other economists and politicians. There are more intelligent followers of Ron Paul, but they only exist in a preconceived notion about the government's involvement and that it is wrong. They continually find reasons or create them to believe that a smaller government is not only good, but is the best thing for our country as a whole. No surprise that there are so many Ron Paul 2012 stickers around on cars and on t-shirts. Both the Tea Party and Ron Paul think that a smaller government will lead to more freedom. This is hard to believe considering the larger freedoms that we have under a larger government that can enforce those freedoms. It is because of the government that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the women's suffrage movement were passed into law by a government that was acting on behalf of its people. They were not accepted at the time and were not naturally evolved into acceptance. This took a lot of time. There is a clear correlation between the size of the government and its efficiency in governments around the globe, which include such important things as lower infant mortality rates and higher literacy rates. Governments that are small are ineffective at providing the structure needed to allocate funds for the whole of the country. Smaller government is easily manipulated, and that is exactly what would happen here if we let Ron Paul run our country. By lowering taxes at the top of the economic food chain and destroying unions has created this problem and led us back to a pre-New Deal America. We need to put a stop to it in 2012.
