When it comes to Windows 7 icons, you may not be entirely sure which way you should design them. On one hand, you can look at other icons and try to figure out what’s so special about them and what makes them so successful. On the other, it can be difficult to figure that out. Here are a few tips for creating your very own Windows 7 icons and creating them to draw in any kind of user that you can think of. First of all, keep it simple. It doesn’t matter if you’re the Frida Kahlo of icons or if you’re the Monet of icons—a really complicated, or even slightly feminine or masculine icon will more than likely completely change not only your user base, but will also make it harder to get people to use your product. You also don’t want a really, really complicated looking icon. You want something that’s simple, easy to recognize, and mildly eye-catching. The idea is to have something that will be easy for your customers to remember—otherwise they may not be able to remember what your product even looked like! Look at any of the icons on your desk. Chances are that most of the applications that you use on a regular basis have icons that you remember in about two seconds. The more complicated icons are the ones that you look at and think “What on earth is that?!” You probably won’t remember what they are for quite a while—or never. There are probably icons that you see every day and you still can’t remember what they are! Next, try and pick an icon that goes with your name. For example, certain document programs have paper and a pen or some combination of that. In short, try and make your icon appropriate. You have loads of ways in which you can do this—just think over what type of icon you would like and look into a few royalty free images. You never realize what types of icons that you can create—and it can be beneficial to a new programmer trying to get their program out to a company that might be willing to buy or who is selling their product independently. Take your time while you create your icons. There’s no need to rush—after all, the most important thing is that the code is correct and free of logic and syntax errors, that you can use the program and get the results that you want, and you take the time to create a program that is efficient. The icon is important—but it comes second to creating a quality product. Finally, have fun creating your icon. It’s the easiest, quickest step once you have created your product.
