It is a well known fact that the United States has the biggest drug problem in the world. At the top of the list in this country is Tennessee and leading the pack in many areas of drug abuse. In 2007, Tennessee was listed the number state in the Union for prescription drug abuse. Just a few weeks ago made the number one spot for meth lab arrests in 2010 and outpacing Missouri again so far this year which is no small feat. Legislators in Tennessee are working tirelessly to stay ahead of the problem and it seems to no avail. Treatment admissions keep mounting and devastatingly high numbers for meth and prescription drugs alike. Believe it or not these drugs are behind alcohol and marijuana on the list of most abused drugs. Lawmakers are attempting to pass bills aimed at curbing the sale of pseudoephedrine, the main ingredient needed in the manufacture of meth, while the DEA and other state and local law enforcement team up to monitor prescription drug distribution. With the mounting drug abuse problem comes new and creative to manufacture and distribute drugs such as the new method of meth lab. This new method known as “shake and bake” has swept the state and are responsible for the record setting meth labs busts made. Thanks to a chemistry major out of Tulsa, Ok this new method does away with the clutter of typical meth labs and allows the drug to made virtually anywhere. The pills are crushed, combined with some common household chemicals and then shaken in the soda bottle. This action creates a deadly chemical reaction designed to change the molecular structure of the ephedrine while pulling it away from the coagulants that bind the pills. In 2007, BlueCross BlueShield Insurance Co. named Tennessee the No. 1 state for prescription abuse. According to reports seven million people admitted using prescription drugs for non-medical reasons that same year. Prescription pain killers are the primary culprit for abuse in Tennessee and are comprised of opioid analgesics which are a high risk for over dose. Prescription drug abuse is the third for most abused drug in the country, behind alcohol and marijuana. Tennessee ranks eighth in the country for prescription drug overdose according to the Office of National Drug Use and Health. Officials in many agencies are investigating those who illegally search for doctors the drugs, otherwise known as “doctor shopping” or illegally sell scheduled prescription drugs. Local, state, and federal agencies have developed task forces to help in the fight against prescription drug diversion. The criminal diversion of prescription drugs involves a wide range of activity that includes prescription fraud by individual addicts to profit motivated traffickers. Violators range from and include healthcare practitioners and patients, pain management clinics, traditional pharmacies, and Internet pharmacies. The current administration is calling for help on all levels that include doctors, state and law enforcement officials, asking them to increase efforts and work harder to stop the scourge of abuse. This is a bit ironic since many of this administration focal points have been on continued prescription care, which includes more sales of drugs. If those that produce these deadly chemicals for profit with wild abandon. All while falsifying studies indicating the deadly addictive qualities that lead to death and devastation. If those that made money from the sale of these drugs took responsibility for those that have suffered from their effects there would be a drastic change for certain. The fight to curtail Tennessee meth production and prescription drug problem will be paid by its taxpayers with billions of dollars on its price tag. The same people who supported the production of these drugs with their purchases that began over a century ago. Tennessee Drug Rehab |
