Payroll Software - It Pays to Shop Around

Payroll software is an important tool for your business. Can you imagine filing payroll taxes incorrectly or late? And how happy would employees be to get their pay checks late? Your business most certainly has its own specific needs where payroll is concerned, and that's why it pays to shop around and get a program that can handle your needs best. Here are some important reasons it pays to shop around. Bigger company does not equal bigger features. You might be thinking that if you choose and purchase payroll software from a huge, well-known company, you are assured of getting all the functionality you need. Such is not necessarily the case. You really can't be sure whether that company can handle your payroll processing needs unless you speak with a representative, read over the detailed features of the program, or dig through the actual program demo to figure it out. The easiest thing to do is write down your unique needs and then speak with a company representative. Better yet, have them show you exactly how their system can handle it. One example of a feature not often offered is the ability to pay an employee with two different types of pay within on day. So, for example, an employee works at the front desk in the morning and then the pool in the afternoon at a different pay rate, you would have a problem entering that time information correctly. This is just one example of a feature not offered by all payroll companies. Pricing schemes vary - a lot. Software isn't like butter or orange juice, where the pricing is relatively similar from store to store. That's probably because every payroll software package varies widely in its 'ingredients' offering, or its features. There could be a limit to the number of employees or a limit to the number of companies managed, or a limit to the number of history years that can be stored. Some companies offer email support only, while others offer a wide variety of support options including live telephone support. You might even find after some research that the payroll software package that works for your company is much less expensive than other similar options. Don't be star-struck by all the bells and whistles offered in a software package. Instead, only purchase the system for your needs that will fit your business for the next seven years. That is the average life-span of a software system! The people you choose to work with makes a difference. You might be thinking, "All we need is the payroll software; what do people have to do with it?" Well, after all your payroll software helps you get your employees and your payroll taxes paid on time. And payroll programs do not create themselves. As time goes on, tax updates are needed and enhancements should be added over time. Not only that, but in times of need, a good support team can help you move forward and get things done, when without them you might just be stuck with a problem or issue and no way to fix it. That's why it's important to check out the people at the payroll software company. Think about the way the salesperson treated you. How about the person answering the phone? The technical staff? These are the people you will be working with for years to come, so be sure they seem like the kind of people you want to work with. Spend the time you need to check into payroll software companies before making your important payroll software purchase. The time spend will save you money and make for much more efficient payroll processing. Stephanie Ellison is the author of this article about payroll software.
