Needless to say, no matter how hard you try to maintain your oral hygiene by brushing your teeth, flossing and paying regular visits to the dentist; Accidents, advanced gum disease and extensive decay can be few unpreventable occasion you lose your teeth. Losing at least one tooth can have an effect on your appearance. It can decrease your chewing ability, would affect your speech, will create gaps and increase wrinkles on your face. Defects may occur in your jaw bone where there are no teeth and if you delay to replace them it will get more difficult and would cost you a lot as well. There are several methods used by dentists to replace missing or damaged teeth. Dental implants, fixing a bridge, dentures and dental crowns are to name some. Dental implants are known to be a long term solution to replace missing teeth. The procedure involves of a titanium metal rod being placed in your jawbone. Then once it is healed a metal post will be placed so that the prosthetic crown could be connected to the implant. Fixing a dental bridge can act as an anchor for your tooth replacement. Before the procedure you will be given local anaesthetic and your dentist would trim the adjacent teeth to allow space for the crown. An impression of your teeth is then taken using a mould to prepare the dental bridge and its crown. Till the dental bridge is fabricated you will be given a temporary one. Once it is made you will be fitted with the dental bridges and your dentist would check whether it fits well. Finally it is permanently fitted to your jawbone. It will last for 10-15 years and you will have to observe good oral hygiene to protect them. Dentures come in handy if you have lost a few teeth or all of them. It can be removed and are comfortable to the wearer. The appearance and functionality would be as same as your natural teeth. They are also known as removable appliances as you would need to remove them to clean the denture and can be also removed and soaked in a cleansing solution when you go to sleep. Dentures can be complete or partial. Complete dentures replace all your lower and upper jaw teeth. Where as partial dentures would replace few missing teeth to prevent remaining teeth from shifting. If you have a broken or cracked tooth a dental crown could be used. They act as caps to your teeth. This is used when your teeth are broken and if you cannot restore it by a filling. A cracked tooth can be secured from further damage by having a dental cap fitted. They are also used when the tooth is badly shaped or discoloured as well. As you know by now there are several ways to replace missing and damaged teeth. However you should always remember to immediately visit your dentist if you suffer a severe tooth damage so it can be easily replaced without developing gum diseases.
